Is Kobo in Line For the Best Ebook Reader Crown?
It’s here: the Kobo eReader. Having established itself as a leading ebookstore, Kobo now has its very own ebook reading device.
So how does the new kid on the block compare with the names we already associate with the best ebook readers – Sony, Kindle and Nook?
Here we take a look at some of the key features.
Memory
The Kobo eReader comes with 1 GB of memory, enough for up to 1000 titles. If your hunger for the written word is bigger still, you can boost this to 4GB with an SD card.
Preloaded titles
Naturally, you’ll want to settle down to a good read right away. No worries – Kobo’s ebook reader comes preloaded with 100 free classics.
Clarity
One thing that distinguishes the best ebook readers from the rest is clarity of display. And Kobo is right up there with the best of them. True, the eReader doesn’t have the touchscreen technology that Sony does, but the 6-inch E-Ink display is crystal-clear and easy on the eyes.
Comfort
The back of the eReader is covered with a quilted, soft-touch material that brings added comfort to the reading experience, especially if you’re the tactile type.
Price
This is where Kobo have scored. The price is just $149, making it one of the cheapest eBook readers around.
By comparison, the Kindle 2 is $259, the Kindle DX $489 and Sony’s cheapest – the Digital Reader Pocket Edition PRS-300 – $199 (though available from Amazon for around $171).
Availability
The Kobo eReader is available initially only in Canada, but scheduled for summer 2010 release in the USA.
Conclusion
Kobo’s offering may not be the best ereader on the market, but it will certainly be a wake-up call for the more established brands. Who knows, it may be the spur we need to see prices start to fall. That can only be a good thing. If the Kobo device doesn’t appeal, be sure to check out the selection at eReaderSales.ca.
